Plat, ktorý dostáva pracovník od svojho zamestnávateľa, je jeho nominálna mzda. Reálna mzda predstavuje množstvo tovarov a služieb, ktoré si za svoj plat môže kúpiť. Je dôležitým ukazovateľom pre hodnotenie životnej úrovne a závisí od nominálnej mzdy, výšky cien tovarov a služieb a daňového zaťaženia.
Reálna mzda sa meria ako pomer rastu platov a indexu spotrebiteľských cien, čiže inflácie. Ak mzdy reálne stúpnu, znamená to, že ľudia si za svoj zárobok môžu kúpiť viac ako predtým. Nárast nominálnych miezd, čiže súm na výplatnej páske neznamená, že automaticky stúpajú aj reálne mzdy. Ak inflácia rastie rýchlejšie ako mzdy, ich reálna hodnota klesá.
Príklad
V spotrebiteľskom koši je len chladnička a televízor. Pracovník zarába mesačne 20-tisíc korún, chladnička stojí 20-tisíc a televízor 5-tisíc. Ak na budúci rok jeho mzda stúpne na 25-tisíc a cena chladničky a televízora sa nezmení, jeho reálna mzda stúpne, lebo si už bude môcť kúpiť obe veci naraz. Ak sa, naopak, zvýši cena chladničky aj televízora o 5-tisíc korún, ale jeho nominálna mzda nie, jeho reálna mzda klesne.
