Spoločnosti, finančné inštitúcie a banky investovali balík peňazí utŕžený obchod na realitnom trhu do investícií po celom svete. Najväčší objem investícií smeroval do obchodu s nerastnými surovinami, prevažne ropy. 27. februára 2008 vystúpila ceny ropy na svetových obchodných trhoch nad hranicu 100 USD za barel suroviny. Barel ľahkej americkej ropy West Texas Intermediate sa predával za 102 USD a cena severomorskej ropy Brent Crude vystúpila na 100,2 USD. Ročný nárast spotreby ropnej suroviny sa odhadoval na jedno percento, pričom svet spotreboval denne takmer štyri milióny barelov ropy. V máji 2008 bola ropná bublina takmer na svojom maxime a analytici sa zamýšľali nad príčinami enormného rastu.
Fondy presúvali napriek upozorneniam svoje peniaze na trh s ropou, pretože ceny sa v dlhodobom horizonte vyvíjali v prospech ropných investícií. Hrozba bankovej krízy v rámci eurozóny znamenala, že ECB napumpovala do systému niekoľko miliárd eur likvidity v podobe prevažne krátkodobých úverov. Objem krátkodobých úverov finančným spoločnostiam vzrástol o 46,4 % ročne. Stav celkového objemu úverov poskytnutých centrálnymi bankami v rámci eurozóny komerčným bankám vzrástol medziročne o 50 %.
